This weeks assignment requested I use an AI service of my choice to create a sample blog post on a topic I’m familiar with. As a long-time Rick and Morty fan, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to evaluate what Gemini would write regarding Justin Roiland’s removal as the title characters of the series. I was pleasantly surprised with how nicely Gemini summarized the issue (click here to view the document if you’re an ASU student or faculty member) and the written post was mostly factual, if not slightly plain in tone.
After Gemini provided the foundation, I was able to re-write the parts that were most important from my perspective, and even linked to credible sources to ensure the information I shared was able to be effectively referenced. This way of interacting with Generative AI is not my norm, and it almost felt backwards for my usual workflow. I would usually write my initial draft and submit it for review to address any potential grammar issues or bad references; the way this assignment requested us to use AI probably works best for those who have trouble initiating ideas/concepts.
In the end, I feel as though I have a better understanding of the importance of reviewing what AI provides us; especially when creating from a simple prompt. It is important that we evaluate the information provided to avoid spreading misinformation unintentional.
To satisfy the curiosity of any readers who may not be a part of the Sun Devil family, I’m including my rewritten Rick and Morty post below:
Rick and Morty: Revisiting The Roiland Controversy
With season 8 of Rick and Morty in full swing, I thought it would be interesting to revisit the drama that took place during Rick and Morty season 7. A major change was immediately apparent during its original airing: the voices of the two titular characters had been recast. The show’s co-creator, Justin Roiland, who had voiced both Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith since the series’ inception, was removed from the roster.
In January 2023, Adult Swim officially cut ties with Roiland following allegations of domestic violence and other misconduct. Although the criminal charges were later dismissed due to insufficient evidence, the network had already made the decision to move forward without him.

Roiland’s improvisational and distinct vocal style was a core part of the show’s identity. The search for new voice actors was extensive, with the show’s creative team committed to finding replacements who could seamlessly replicate the iconic voices. The goal was to avoid disrupting the viewing experience while allowing the story to remain the central focus.
The new voice actors were ultimately revealed as Ian Cardoni for Rick Sanchez and Harry Belden for Morty Smith. Wanting fans to judge the performance on its own merits, the identity of the new voices was originally kept confidential. The transition was successful, with viewers praising Cardoni and Belden for their uncanny ability to capture the unique tones, stammers, and emotional range of the characters, while some more discerning viewers claimed to notice minor differences.
Despite the controversy, the show has continued its run with minimal disruption, even making a slight jab at its difficult past in the most recent season. While I wait to engage with the new content once it hits streaming services, I am excited to see the changes brought about.
